Key conventions of film openings

Romantic crime directors

Image
Doug Limon Doug Limon is most famously known for directing Mr and Mrs Smith, staring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, but also for directing the Bourne Films, which are full of action which Mr and Mrs Smith also contains. Doug Limon uses many close up shots to convey characters emotions, however to show the scene takes place in New York City and not Los Angeles, where it was filmed, they use many establishing shots, which sets the scenes and show the  audience where the film is set. In addition, he uses many short shots and then cuts to another short shot, creating a chaotic and exciting effect. In my film opening I would like to use short shots to create this effect but also close up to show the emotions, as it is also a romance as well as crime.  Top movies directed by Doug Liman Glenn Ficarra Glenn Ficarra has recently directed 'focus', which is the reason I decided to change my film genre. Not only did he direct focus, but crazy stupid love, which is what I wanted to

Preliminary task evaluation

Image
Our preliminary task involved someone opening a door, walking across a room, sitting down and exchanging a few sentences of dialogue between two people. We had to incorporate shot reverse shot, 180 degree rule and match on action, into our short film to learn how they are used. Overall I enjoyed learning about the new camera techniques and getting used to filming. I found it more difficult than I expected to stick to the rules, for instance the 180 degree rule, however in my film opening I will now know not to the 'cross the line'. Whilst doing this preliminary task we used a range of different equipment and software most of which was new to me.When filming the short clip, I used a filming camera which was put into a tripod, to ensure that the shot was straight and not tilted. I didn't use a hand held camera as that would have created a distorted and slightly tense effect, which would be better in a horror or action film. When I got to the editing stage of my task, I used

Axel's help

Last week Axel, a professional camera man, came into our lesson and gave us advice on our preliminary videos and how to improve them. We also filmed a few more shots to show how the shots should have looked. These looked much better, as the main images in the shot were central, showing the they were most important part of the shot. One main aspect I know I have to improve now, from Axels help, would be putting the object and characters central to the frame, so that frame space isn't wasted. In addition, one big mistake I made was not filming enough footage to get what I wanted. As a consequence my film sequence jumped from one character standing up to sitting down. Overall Axel's visit was very helpful as he helped to identify the problems and allow us to fix them for our film opening.

Foley Sound

Image
Foley sound is the use of every day sound used In film making to improve the audio and create a better image of the world the movie is set in. Foley sound effects are added to the movie during post production. This can be anything from: creaking doors footsteps doors opening and slamming glass breaking Hunger During class we watched the movie hunger, as previously said silence was a huge part in the film to create different emotions and most of all to heighten and emphasise every other sound. However a lot of Foley sound was used throughout the extract, for instance the sound of creaking doors, heavy breathing and bath water swishing. My movie opening Foley sound is something I would like to incorporate into my film opening to improve the audio quality and make it more interesting. Due to my film being a romantic crime, the Foley sounds you may expect to hear would be guns shots and loud footsteps.
